| Father Spittler joined the department in 1965 after spending a year at the Mellon Institute (Pittsburgh) doing post-doctoral research. Fr. Spittler teaches special topics for non-science majors including History of Chemistry and Issues in Science and Religion. Father has been quite active also in the Health Professions Advisory Committee. In recent years, Fr. Spittler has acquired considerable interest and expertise in the History of Chemistry. He is particularly interested in the discovery of the elements and the development of The Periodic Table. Fr. Spittler was on leave for the 1987-88 academic year and spent time researching various aspects of the history of chemistry. He has completed articles on Nobel Laureates Hinshelwood, Semenov and Eigen for a book on Nobel Laureates in Chemistry which has been published by the American Chemical Society. He has also written an article on Hinshelwood for a book on Nobel Laureates in Chemistry published by Salem Press. More recently, he has been active on the Archives Committee of the Cleveland section of the American Chemical Society. He collaborated with Professor Alan Rocke and one of his graduate students, Richard Hammerla in preparing a booklet on the history of the chemical industry in Cleveland for the bicentennial celebration in 1996. In the last two years, the Archives Committee has been involved in establishing four National Historic Chemical Landmarks in the Cleveland area. Fr. Spittler chaired the subcommittee that planned for the establishment of one of these Historic Landmarks at Oberlin College, honoring the Hall Process for recovering aluminum from its ores in 1886. |
